Elementary school level Automatic promotion has not just improved the number of children successfully completing elementary schooling but also results in much lacking basic knowledge of arithmetic, calculation and common general knowledge questions. The results of a recent survey on the “Annual Status of Education Report” which covered 28 rural districts of 24 states proved how many children lack basic knowledge, with the highlight being Srikakulam district.
The sample was based on 1,047 youth belonging to 954 houses, covering 60 villages of Srikakulam, and they were Asked basics like time, weight, measurement questions, besides percentages and discounts, and finding states on a map, calculation of chlorine needed to purify water, ORS preparation by seeing instructions at back of the packet, to name a few. The survey revealed that in Srikakulam, 20 percent weren't able to read Standard II text, 40 % didn't know division and 22.4 % lacked knowledge of subtraction.
Irrespective of the
statistics, the Srikakulam students are better than students of other
states. As said by District Information System for Education (DISE), Class VIII
enrollment increased from 11 Million 2004-05 to 22 million in 2014-15. It was
also emphasized that young men and women who are forced to discontinue
education for reasons beyond control, must be supported by their
families.
