South India has witnessed one of the coldest winters. Even near end of season, temperatures are seen dipping. Popular Weather blogger Tamil Nadu Weatherman announced in his official Facebook page that February 1was the coldest day of the season in Tamil Nadu in many years. Chennai's Madhavaram recorded 15.5 C, while Hosur, Krishnagiri faced 7 C. January 6 was Chennai's coldest night, as temperature dropped as low as 19 C, and at Meenambakkam 18.2 C was recorded. 

 


Besides Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad also had very low temperature on February 1 , it's coldest in 6 years, and this was attributed to cold winds from north easterly regions on Telangana. Hyderabad felt the cold at 12.8 C on February 1, four degrees lesser than mean minimum temperature for February which was 18.3 C. The previous instance of this low temperature in Hyderabad was on February 5, 2011. SSV Gavaskar, Karnataka Disaster Monitoring Centre's prominent scientist, reasoned out for the temperature to anti-cyclonic circulation in Maharashtra / Madhya Pradesh zone, causing colder winds to move south.

Even Karnataka Felt cold, and in the past, temperatures have dropped to 12 C on January 16, 2012 and 12.1 C on January 19, 2009, and in the past two days, Bengaluru temperatures varied between 11 C - 13 C, and the coldest night was on January 20 with temperature dipping to 11.7 C. Tumkur district had temperature drop as low as 7 C.
