In a shocking twist to events, a temple priest from Mayiladuthurai’s Mayuranathaswami temple has been sacked, after a WhatsApp photo went viral. Reportedly, Raj, the temple priest who had joined six months ago to help his father, had decorated goddess Abhayambal, the deity of the temple, in salwar kameez. This made devotees become upset that the 1000 year old idol's sanctity was damaged totally by this act.



The temple manager Ganeshan said, temple authorities immediately made the decision to sack him and his father. While it's a common practice to decorate the deity using sandalwood paste Fridays. However, going against traditional practice of decorating with saree, Raj dressed the goddess in salwar-kameez-dupatta, using the glitter paper commonly used to dress the saree.

Without realizing the seriousness this issue might cause, the father and son captured an image of the deity and shared on WhatsApp. The Thiruvadheenam Aadheenam (Mutt) that comprises of 27 other temples of Tamilnadu in its control immediately decided to sack Raj and his father. However, even in past, temple priests had done creative decorations and In 2017 January on eve of New Year celebrations, a Coimbatore based temple decorated its deity using new 2000 rupee notes. The offering became a sensation, as it was done Indian government announced demonetization of high-value notes.
