On March 23, elections will be held for the vacant seats in Rajya Sabha in different states. For a total of 58 seats, the elections will be held on this Friday.  Finance minister Arun Jaitley is all set to contest the elections from Uttar Pradesh. As BJP doesn't possess majority currently in the parliament, the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections are of high importance. 

 


15 states are rules by BJP alliances in the country. 21 are directly ruled by BJP chief ministers. Of the total strength of 245 Rajya sabha seats, 83 are owned by the national democratic alliance NDA, of which BJP has only 58 seats. The Rajya sabha members will be selected on the basis of votes my MLAs. While there are currently 10 Rajya sabha seats vacant in Uttar Pradesh, it is expected that BJP will win 8 of these, and each victory requires the support of 37 MLAs.

 In Bihar, BJP and Congress can win 3 seats each. Out of the 6 seats in Maharashtra, BJP can win 2 and Shiv Sena can win 1. Gujarat has 4 seats, and BJP can send 2 Rajya Sabha members out of 99, and Congress can send 2 out of 78. Karnataka has 4 seats of which BJP can send one member, and of the seats in Madhya Pradesh, BJP can send 4. Biju Janatha dal can send 3 members in Odisha, and in Andhra, TDP can win 2 seats, and Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala, Marxist can win.
