The Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI has announced that other than the captains of Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, the other 6 captains of franchises, need not attend the opening ceremony of IPL which will be held on April 7. All the 8 captains will be involved in the shooting of a special promotional video on April 6, and they will be leaving to their cities.

Till 2017, the practice was that the captains would be attending the opening ceremony and signs the spirit of cricket pledge.  In the IPL governing meeting, it was decided that the opening ceremony will be held prior to the opening match between CSK and MI. This happened because of a logistics issue regarding the matches of four other teams on the next day. A BCCI official had said that Gambhir and Ashwin had been called just a day before a noon match, which is absolute lack of homework.

This logistics miss also means that players like Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik, of RCB and KKR, will have to travel before match day, though they will have to join the evening match. The BCCI acting president Khanna said that the logistics issue will be resolved at the earliest and that the shoot with captains will happen a day before, and will be shown on the opening ceremony.
