The issue came to light in May, after a complaint by a woman in Amar Colony police station, that her photo was misused as the display picture by an account in a dating app, without seeking her permission. while she was informed about the misuse by an acquaintance, her request to the account to remove her photo, wasn't fulfilled, said the Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal.
The police registered the case and registered mobile phone number in the dating app account helped cops nab the criminals. As said by cops, as victims were worried about the social issues on approaching cops, they didn't care about the loss of a small amount like ₹500 and ₹1,000.
The accused were running the racket for almost 10 months and had befriended his partnering woman in outer Delhi’s Rohini a year before. Chiranjeevi wanted a woman to make calls to targets and get money from them and had paid her RS 600 per day. The duo made use of the dating application to send friend requests to men, some of whom needed company by women at their homes, following which the woman would demand money citing some reason from the target.
