It was announced by the central government that the multi-specialty hospital AIIMS, with all modern technology and equipment and facilities, will be constructed in Thoppur area of Madurai city. For this purpose, a 200-acre land was also chosen, to construct AIIMS hospital.

There are plans to establish AIIMS hospital across India at 14 cities. After many months of selection and dilemma, the Thoppur area was finalized and this process itself took many months. People's awareness trust from Madurai had raised an RTI petition demanding Answers on questions like when will the work begin and how much funds are allocated.
