It has been believed that Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi maiam party has achieved a target of breaking the alliance in progress between DMK and Congress. Kamal Haasan had formed the Makkal Needhi Maiam party last February and since then he has been making whirlwind tours across the state to different cities and villages, meeting the public, interacting with them, and conducting general meetings to get closer to people.
While TN leaders ignored, only Kamal Haasan attended the swearing-in ceremony of Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, and he had even met the Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Again in June, he met Rahul as well as his mother Sonia Gandhi, and there are speculations since then that Makkal Needhi Maiam will join hands with Congress.
Even Congress spokesperson Thirunavukarasar has said that Kamal is interested in the alliance with Congress but not with DMk, thus indicating that there might be a split in DMK - Congress alliance.
