The Supreme court has quashed National Green Tribunal's proposal ordering the reopening of Sterlite factory in Thoothukudi. After huge protests against Sterlite copper factory in Thoothukudi, due to environmental issues and health impacts on people in the place, the protests reached 100 days, and on the day 100, cops opened fire killing more than 13 innocent civilians.

And on May 28, TN Government ordered permanent closure of Sterlite. But Vedanta group had made an appeal against the closure and then the Green tribunal team said there are no impacts to the environment from Sterlite and ordered the opening of the factory.

However TN govt appealed against Green tribunal and in the case hearing today, the bench headed by justice Nariman ordered that the National Green Tribunal does not have control or authority for ordering the reopening of Sterlite, and added that Vedanta can file a plea to Chennai High court regarding the issue.
