Dear Future Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh,

Congratulations on becoming the Chief Minister. As an Educated Youth of this State, let me voice out few of my concerns, aspirations and expectations from the future Chief Minister. First, I would like to start with your Manifesto. I am sure your team along with political strategists would have come out with a great manifesto (just like our Puri Jaganath’s powerful script) with schemes and doles that sound like Trivikram’s punch dialogues. Dear Sir/Mam, let me stop you right there.
All we ask is Good Schools for our children in villages. Make Public Education Better; please take measures to focus on learning outcomes of the children in schools, but not just enrolment rate. It’s time we send children to schools to become knowledgeable and wise, but not just for mid day meals. Our Children are Our Biggest Strength and Future, Lets Invest in them qualitatively with utmost care and responsibility. Sir/Mam, Kindly do not commodify Education, we have already ruined a generation by making them cram MPC/BiPC answers in their intermediate; we have killed creativity and critical thinking. We cannot let higher education institutes starting from intermediate to engineering colleges produce a bunch of machines with rote learning. Our state is the highest producing engineers in the country and still most of them cannot find a job. This needs to stop right now.

Our Youth is strong, fearless and sadly degrees without skills are making us cowards. It’s time you have a good action plan and invest in good higher education that grooms our youth productively. Once you do that, youth themselves can take care of their livelihoods and you don’t have to dole out. We are in the age of Industrial Revolution 4.0. Time to Update our Syllabus, Curriculum, Pedagogy and Ring the Bell!!!

Nothing can be more important than Health. Quoting from the recent Status report on SDGs in Andhra Pradesh, 39% of children aged less than 5 years are suffering from stunting and 59% of them have anaemia. 60% of women aged between 15 – 49 years are also suffering from anaemia. 39% of the public healthcare centres in the state are not even fulfilling the minimum service requirements. Not all Anganwaadi Centres in the state have their own premises with a kitchen, safe drinking water facility and toilet but still the daily ration is being given to these centres. Why is that we still have to see people losing out on their lives just because of improper medical care and lack of access to better medical facilities. How do you plan to overcome this? Am sure you and your team must have a strong plan to deal this. Care to explain in the Manifesto!!!

Sir/Mam, Come Elections time and most of you are ready to waive off the farm loans and give subsidies to our Annadaata’s. Let me tell you something sir/mam – this won’t work and you know it. I sincerely hope you do not repeat this mistake. Please help our farmers in the right way, our farmers productivity is very low, most of them depend on rains, more than 80% of our farmers are small and marginal, they do not have access to greater bargaining power. Andhra experiences Drought – Flood phenomenon every year and in either of the cases, farmers will mostly lose out their crops. It’s time the government invests in modern agriculture practices. Let us bring precision farming, scientific methods and techniques to our fields. Create Value chains in the villages. Make Agriculture as a subject in schools, start technical institutes focusing on agriculture research, make this profession attractive and let youth take up this noble profession. It’s time we adopt Climate Smart Agriculture and all that can happen only if you change your outlook towards our farmers. They are hard working, intelligent and our food bowls that takes care of us; now it’s your turn dear Future Chief Minister to take care of them. You can make our farmers an inspiration to all other farmers in the country. So, choose your ideas wisely for the famer!!!

Quoting from the recent Status report on SDGs in Andhra Pradesh, the headcount ratio for the Multidimensional poverty index (MPI) poor in the state is 21% during 2016 – 17. Sir/Mam, Please ensure your manifesto doesn’t treat us like Beggars, Don’t give us freebies, don’t make us weak. You are supposed to lead us, give us strength & hope and that can only happen by making us self reliant and self sufficient. Give support to the vulnerable to arise and become strong, lend a hand to the weak to stand up, give us tools and support system with respect and dignity, but not throwing away bunch of freebies and doles. In case if you still decide to go ahead with giving away freebies and doles, kindly do explain how you are going to fund it and how will that help the state. Dear Future Chief Minister, Please Please make sure you know the “How’s” better than “What’s” of your manifesto. Enough of Populism that hurts the future, time for the present Rationalism!!!

Sir/Mam, our country is safe and we all sleep peacefully because our armed forces guard our nation day and night. A soldier when posted on the Line of Control and Border would have to be present there, but cannot work from some other post or station. It’s the discipline of a soldier and dedication towards the job that makes our country safe and secure. Dear Future Chief Minister, I have not diverted from the topic. I see an MRO, a school headmaster, a PHC doctor and many more government officers & public servants posted in villages, but chose to operate from different places. In some cases they stay in a district headquarters for reasons like their children’s education in the convent school and 99 other reasons. There are instances of empty chairs, officials missing in office during working hours, long delays, inefficiency creeping into the system, poor quality of work, no timely delivery of services etc. How do you plan to imbibe accountability into the public service and offices? May be you should start accountability with your own governance and set an example for the government officers and staff in the state. Time for Good Governance in Practice!!!

Sir/Mam, we need to have a minimum qualification and clear the selection process even to become a group 4 staff in the government. I know the constitution gives the Chief Minister the right to chose the cabinet, but my dear future Chief Minister, I hope you have the right reasons to make someone a Minister. You do understand that you and your cabinet Ministers shape our future, you write our destiny as policymakers and you better have your A team ready for these jobs. All I am saying is it’s time to raise above petty give and take politics; go beyond nepotism and favoritism. As citizens of the state we deserve to have our leaders governing the state for the very right reasons – inclusive welfare, fair growth and sustainable development.

We are not demanding luxurious lives, but make it less stressful; we do not want smart cities everywhere, but good governance; we do not want high rise buildings and glass ceilings, all we need is proper basic infrastructure, we are not asking a Paradise on Earth, all we need is a Decent Living Standard in our own state. Hence Dear Chief Minister, Please choose your men/women wisely who can be trusted, preferably who is well educated and aware of the society, conscious of the problems of the state, one who has vision yet understands the reality of the present and most importantly who can inspire people in the neighbourhood with their actions. You have a month and we the people of Andhra are ready to listen – Bring it on!!!

Yours sincerely
A Hopeful Andhra Youth
