Markets function as per the law of Demand and Supply, according to the classical economics. This is the law that our rulers evoke, when it comes to price rise.Thier logic runs as follows: As the food grain supply in the country is not matching with the demand from the consumers, the prices of the food items are raising or inflation is rising. In other words the demand for the food items is exceeding the limits of supply or production, in our country.  Then what shall we do? Simply, we should try to improve the production of the food grains and thus augment the production. But before that could be done, look all around for all the possible sources of avoiding wastage and leakages. But, what could be done, when this wastage is being perpetuated by the very Government that talks about the need for the increased supply of the food grains...If we look around, we would find ‘overflowing stocks’ of wheat and other food grains in the warehouses of the Food Corporation of india. They are overflowing so much that; of late the Food ministry of India has proposed for the exporting of around 2million metric tons of Wheat from these stocks.  We should understand, this is all being done in the same context; where in the food inflation figure for the month of May, 2012 has crawled up to 10.74% from the level of 10.49% in the month of April, 2012.This rise in the inflation is supposed to be because of the rise in the prices of the food items like the Wheat too.The other foods that contributed to this rise in the inflation figure are the potatoes and the pulses. That is the true colour of the story of the ‘shortage of supply.’ This story was questioned n number of times by our courts; which asked the Government to release the stocks of food grains from the FCI warehouses (and thus increase supply in the market) and help the common man with the rising prices of the food grains and other food items. But none of the admonishments of the courts bore fruit; despite the fact that those food grains are rotting in the storehouses or else are becoming feed to the rodents. Now add this to the new round of plans to export the wheat, in the backdrop of the rise of its price in the market. ..Hope all of you understand, why the prices of the food items are raising in our country...It is not because of the shortage of the food supply...It is just because the law of the demand and supply is being distorted by the ‘actions’ of those who hold to the reins of power. The pro-rich and the pro-forwards markets policies of this ruling class do hold the real key to the rising prices...and can any other logic be put forth other than this....welcome if such a one exists!!!
