In what is being seen as major development, the key power grid of India, the northern power grid has reportedly been connected to the southern power grid by synchronizing the Sollapur–Raichur 765 KV transmission line costing thousands of crores including the costs for next phase! The southern grid supplies power for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka while Pondicherry is asynchronously interconnected with the north-east-west region through Gazuwaka–Chandrapur high voltage line along with Talcher–Kolar lines. With the synchronization of the Solapur–Raichur line, the southern states are all set to benefit by way of increased power import as it would get power from power-surplus states like Haryana and Rajasthan. This was not possible till now due to transmission problems. Sources say Andhra Pradesh can stand to get an additional power of 500 MW out of the 1,500 MW that would flow into the southern grid and at the same time during summer all southern states including AP can purchase power at a cheaper rate from power surplus northern states and this can make power cuts a thing of the past in towns and villages!
