Food and Civil supplies Minister of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan, a seasoned politician is the only prominent Dalit face of the cabinet. Surprisingly, Paswan is the first to rejoin the NDA which he had quit following the 2002 Gujarat riots. Paswan is considered as the best judge in politics to be correctly guessing the edge in political circles always. Paswan is started with his political career in 1969 by winning Bihar Assembly election as a member of Samyukta Socialist Party. Paswan soon has shifted to the national politics and had successfully held key ministries under various prime ministers. He surprised many by cutting off RJD and Congress by joining hands with NDA this time, but won by over 2.25 lakh votes from his traditional seat Hajipur (SC) in Bihar. This is the nineth time that Paswan would enter Lok Sabha which is a record. He is always been special in terms of his majority numbers. He made a dream debut in Parliament in 1977 by a margin of 4.24 lakh votes that took him straight to the Guinness Book of World Records. In 1989, he improved the record by winning from the same seat by 5 lakh votes. Paswan won election to Parliament in 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2014. In V P Singh ministry in 1989, Paswan became minister for Labour and Welfare. In 1996, he became Railway Minister in Prime Minister I K Gujral’s cabinet. In the NDA ministry he presided over Communications ministry but was later shifted to Coal. During UPA-I he held portfolios of steel and chemicals and fertilizer. UPA II was the only government which did not include him as a minister from 2009 to 2014. Paswan is perhaps the only leader to serve as a Union Minister under six different Prime Ministers namely Vishwanath Pratap Singh, H D Devegowda, I K Gujaral, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi. In the current polls, Paswan’s LJP bagged six of the seven seats it had contested in Bihar tying up with the BJP led NDA.
