In what can be considered a significant step clearing a major legal hurdle for Hyderabad Metro Rail project, the Centre has reportedly notified this project under Metro Railways (Construction) Act, 1978. While this offers the much-needed rectifying move as the project was earlier mistakenly implemented as per the provisions of Tramways Act, the step is all set to put the ongoing controversy over the proposed Metro alignment change at rest. With Telangana CM KCR’s insistence on realignment kicking up a storm, the notification which has reportedly been on issued on September 19, 2014, ratifies all the original routes agreed upon in the concessionaire agreement. This agreement was signed by then United AP government and Larson & Toubro, under public-private partnership (PPP) model. Sources say that the Centre has intervened at a perfect time when the controversy was all set to reach a breaking point, and L&T threatening to exit from the project.
