The AP state government's ambitious plans of offering nutritious food to the poor at a lower price (below Rs 10 per plate) by means of subsidized `Anna Canteens' has reportedly come as a cropper with reports that there is a fund crunch. The Naidu government announced in July 2014 for plans to start Anna Canteens on the lines of Amma Canteens which have become successful in Tamil Nadu. October 2 was all set to see the formal launch of this scheme in Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Vijayawada and Anantapur, with more than 40 canteens marking the first phase. However, the government seems to have postponed this without even declaring any fresh launch date while even the officials of urban local bodies and the civil supplies department are clueless as to when these canteens will start. CPI state leader Satyanarayana Murthy had criticized this as failure of the Naidu government saying that the CM was more eager to visit Singapore than focus on schemes which benefits the common man.
