The Centre has reportedly shut down the more than four-decade-old, Hindustan Cables Limited in Hyderabad which has shocked Telangana. HCL is an undertaking of Government of India under the ministry of heavy industries and public enterprises.

This was once a pioneer in the manufacture of telecom cables in the country which has suffered hard after the emergence of wireless technology. This is the first such central public sector unit being closed after formation of Telangana state.

And it also joins long list of closed units in the region like Republic Forge, Allwyn, Praga Tools and others, which has left thousands of employees jobless. The closure of HCL is being seen as a rude shock to 600 plus employees.

All of them were waiting for revival package from the ministry in collaboration with the Ordnance Factory Board and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam, which didn’t materialize. HCL is located in Cherlapally, Ranga Reddy district on a 327 acre land.
