New capital construction for Andhra Pradesh is triggering lot of controversies. Even before the state divison, rumours erupted about the new capital with different names popping out with each passing second. This resulted in increase in land values.

After the divison, the land acquisition from farmers through land pooling scheme introduced by Chandra Babu Naidu's TDP government in the state met with lot of opposition. Opposition parties like Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSRCP made things difficult for the government. Not to be left behind is Janasena chief Pawan Kalyan.

Now even experts say new capital construction comes with lot of consequences as the government is acquiring more than 30,000 acres of fertile land. S Jeevananda Reddy, former advisor to United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO),says “With the conversion of an agricultural intensive area into a city, there will be a direct impact on food security and an indirect impact on the economy. I fear that the government will not stop with the acquisition of 30,000 acres but will go on converting more land for city purposes and thus cause a great ecological imbalance,“

P.Pulla Rao, state Agriculture Minister however says “The loss of 30,000 acres of fertile land will not adversely affect the foodgrains production of the state,“. But farmers who have their own fears are opposing the government move. GV.Ramanjaneyulu,an agriculral activist said “It will trigger rapid urbanization in the surroundings, and this can eventually reduce the agrarian acreage and bring down the agricultural economy,“. P.Pulla Rao however says “There are about 15 lakh acres of cultivable land where no crops are grown at present. We will introduce drip irrigation and other methods and increase productivity,“. Unless until clearcut and expert planning is there, lot of imbalances will be resulting with the acquisiton of fertlie lands on such large scale.
