Immediately after assuming power, the TRS government had resorted to reopening banned toddy shops, not heeding to any vociferous protests from the civil society regarding such a move. That would now coming into insignificance with the latest proposal made from TRS government.

It is now all set for reintroducing sale of ‘arrack’, an alcoholic spirit derived from the sap of coco, palm or rice. The TRS government's latest move, however, has provoked several sections of the society people since no government had planned for reintroducing arrack after it was banned in United AP in the year 1993 due to widespread social unrest.

This is being seen as disastrous move that would leading to more social problems. The government should not be venturing into such a dangerous exercise, according to many people in the society as well as the government officials. It would lead to abuse of women, children and attacks for money and as expected, inebriated states have resulted in accidents and murders.

It is not clear as to whether such an anti-social decision would be introduced by the TRS government even as there are reports that it is studying the Maharashtra model where the arrack is being sold with a name called “desi daru”. The government feels this is aimed at regulating the sales of illicitly distilled liquor which happens rampant across Telangana.
