Telugu Desam Party after the state division is existing in two states and is planning to expand to all the states with significant Telugu population. Thus the party wants to become a National Party. As the first attempt in that direction, the party had contested in Andaman and Nicobar Municipal elections. The elections there happened for the total of 24 wards and teh counting took place today.
BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 10 wards while Congress managed to win 6 wards. Telugu Desam Party did win 2 wards while Tamil Parties — DMK and AIADMK managed to win one ward each. Independents and others managed 4 wards. No party managed absolute majority. Probably BJP will manage with TDP, AIADMK and others.
TDP's performance on its debut is very impressive. Further the party managed to come second in 16 wards boosting its confidence. The party had taken these elections very seriously and even sent some of its senior leaders to campaign there. These elections assume significance in the wake of TDP bidding to become national party.
