As per Ramayana, Lord Rama, Sita and Ravana had earlier encountered each other during Sita's massive swayamvar. It was organized by her father Janak. King Janak invited Ravana too.
It is a rule that Kingdoms of those times must send invitation to all potential Kings of all kingdoms requesting them to compete for his daughter. Ravana almost defeated every groom present and he decided to take up the bow as winner. But that is the time where Lord Rama arrived and the rest is history.
