In the olden days the way to introduce a person or yourself was to give a detailed description starting with your name, gothra gives information about your lineage nakshatra gives information about you as a person having a particular nakshatra has so and so qualities as sun signs in astrology you can guess something about the person if you know they are of a particular sign.
So in olden days when introducing oneself a person used to give all this big intro to a stranger especially kings or higher officials, or priests or older wiser people in the family community etc.
Similarly when we go to god we are introducing ourselves to god saying that i am so and so and i have come to perform abhisheka or archana to you. Doing archana means having god with his various names.
Before doing so, we take a sankalpa (oath) stating that on this particular day place, year, month, season, day, star, this pooja is performed on behalf of this specific person who was born on this star, who was born in this particular clan classified by gotras.
