Gayatri Mantra is the basic prayer for Hindu brahmins, especially men who wear a janeyu, and by reciting the four lines of the mantra, they are invoking the mother goddess represented by savitr or sun god. Thus it is recited at sunrise or sunset.



Swami Vivekananda translated the Gayatri Mantra thus ‘We meditate upon the glory of that Being who has produced this Universe. May he enlighten our minds’. Swami Vivekananda stated that Indian youngsters should get up early and pray God early morning which will develop inner positive thoughts and so our personality grows which strengthens minds of many.

Meanwhile Radhakrishnan, Indian philosopher and second President of India, has done this translation: We meditate on the effulgent glory of the Divine Light, may he inspire our understanding. We meditate on the adorable glory of the radiant sun, may he inspire our intelligence.
