But this year the things are different as Kerala has been hit by brutal rains and floods, and thousands of people are in relief camps still. It is timely that Onam, a festival of comebacks, arrived now. Onam was celebrated as per legend to mark the return of the demon King Mahabali to Kerala.
Onam festivities are to welcome him, and though a demon, he was kind and generous, making his tenure of Kerala rule called as the Golden period. However, Gods disliked him and asked Lord Vishnu’s help to finish Mahabali. Vishnu was reluctant initially as mahabali was his devotee. Vishnu then took the dwarf the form of a dwarf Vaamana avatar and asked three wishes to Mahabali.
Vishnu asked a land that measured three paces, and Mahabali agreed. The dwarf Vaamana grew and his feet Mahabali's kingdom in just two steps. For the third step, Mahabali Bent down and Vaamana placed his foot over the king’s head and gave him moksha. Mahabali got what he deserved for his devotion and will return the bearth once every year. Thus Onam is the celebration of Comeback of a king who lost his home kingdom, thus becoming relevant to people of Kerala this year as they're rebuilding themselves after losing lives and homes. wishing the people of Kerala a happy Onam and a grand Comeback!
