Dussehra is celebrated on last day of navratri on Vijaya Dashami 

Most parts of north and south india dussehra is celebrated to commemorate the Lord Ram victory over evil king Ravana. In north-eastern states especially Bengal it is celebrated to mark the victory of goddess Durga over buffalo demon Mahishasura. 

   This years dussehra festival falls on October 08, some of them associates it with victory of Lord Ram, other celebrates it as victory of goddess Durga. Overall, the fervour of festival remains almost same throughout the country. According to Gregorian calendar the festival falls in month of September or October every year.

    The word Vijaya Dashami means vijaya as victory and Dashami as tenth. Similarly dussehra in sanskrit language means Dasha as ten, while Hara is defeat. dussehra is one of the most important festivals of Hindu religion, after 20 days of Dussehra, the festival of lights diwali is celebrated to mark the homecoming of victorious Lord Ram. 

      In south India, navratri is celebrated nine days with preparations of Golu,  mysore dussehra is most amazing in whole of India, the palace of mysore is decorated, and cultural programmes related to festival is organized.
