hyderabad: P Vighney Reddy of RBI brushed aside the challenge of Swarnendu of AVSC to march in the men’s singles semifinals of the 2nd Dr.MV sridhar Memorial State Ranking Table tennis tournament, here on Friday.


Vighney scored an easy 11-4, 11-5, 11-9, 11-4 victory. In another quarterfinals, Arvind of AWA and B Varun shankar of MLR were stretched by their respective opponents before earning their semis berth. Amaan-ur-Rahaman of AVSC began on a strong note by winning the first game 19-17 and it looked as if Arvind was in some sort of trouble. But Arvind pulled up his socks and took the next game at 11-7.


Amaan hit back by winning the next one 13-11 but Arvind took the next three games to clinch the issue. Varun, on the other hand, began well against ali Mohd. varun won the first two games at 11-7, 11-4 before experience a midmatch slump. varun lost the next two games at 6-11, 8-11 to level the tie. However, he came up with a much improved show in the next two games to win them at 11-9, 11-6. In the women’s singles quarterfinals, Srishti Gupta of AVSC overcame a fighting V Sasya of AWA in a thrilling encounter.


Srishti pipped Sasya 10-12, 11-5, 11-4, 9-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-3. V Laasya too failed to make the semis as she fell to Varuni Jaiswal of GSM 14-12, 13-15, 11-7, 11-9, 11-9. Favorite Varuni, however, had a tough time in the Youth quarterfinals against Shrishti. Varuni had to bring all her experience into play to edge out Shrishti 6-11, 11-7, 10-12, 10-12, 11-3, 11-9, 11-9
