The fourth test of India Vs England tournament at Southampton began with England winning the toss and opting to bat first. Openers Cook and Jennings failed miserably, as they were dismissed early by  Pandya and Bumrah, and skipper Joe Root followed in quick succession as well, Bumrah packed off Bairstow to the pavilion sooner.

Ben Stokes and Jos Butler tried to resurrect the England innings as the team was at 36/4 at a point, but sooner they were both dismissed by Mohammed Shami, for 23 and 21. Unexpectedly, while England was reeling under pressure at 86/6, entered Sam Curran and Moeen Ali who played crucial knocks to lift the spirit of England team.

Curran and Ali kept the Indian bowlers at bay for most of the time. as they scored runs at will before Ashwin dismissed Curran for 78(136), and later Ali for 40(85), breaking an 81 run partnership, and with Rashid and Broad not giving much support, the English innings was finally wrapped for 246.

Bumrah was the pick of Indian bowlers with 3/46. Indian innings began Dhawan 3(8)* and KL Rahul 11(16)* opening the innings, and as the day 1 ended, India was 19/0, trailing by 227 runs with 10 wickets remaining.
