The first test of India's tour of Australia began with India winning the toss and opting to bat first. The Indian innings began on a disastrous note with Hazlewood dismissing opener KL Rahul (2) early. Soon, Starc removed Murali Vijay for 11, and skipper Virat Kohli too followed suit, scoring just 3(16).

Hazlewood returned to dismiss Rahane 13(31), but Cheteshwar Pujara was steady at the other end, standing rock solid. Rohit Sharma promised for a while scoring several sixes before being dismissed for 37(61), while Rishab Pant yet again failed as Lyon dismissed him for 25(38).

As Pujara marched past his 50, he was joined by Ravichandran Ashwin, who gave company for a brief while before Cummins scalped his wicket for 25(76). With literally no support at the other end, Pujara went on to score a belligerent ton before he was finally run out for a stunning knock of 123(246b, 7x4,2x6), as India ended day 1 at 250/9 at stumps, with Shami on the field scoring 6(9)*.
