The fourth day of the first test of India's tour of Australia began with India resuming on 151/3, with Pujara and Rahane on the crease. The duo steadied the Indian innings and forged a good partnership before Lyon dismissed both the batsmen, with Pujara for 71(204) and Rahane for 70(147).

Rohit Sharma's disastrous form continued as he was scalped by Lyon for 1(6), and Rishabh Pant stood for a while to only get out sooner after a good start, for 28(16), to Lyon. Starc made a quick work of the tail, dismissing Ashwin and Ishant while Lyon removed Shami, as India was bundled out for 307 in their second innings, with a lead of 322, with Lyon being the pick of Aussie bowlers with 6/122.

Chasing 123, Australia began their second innings, with Ashwin soon removing opener Finch for 11(35). While Harris stood firm for a while, he was soon removed by Shami for 26(49), and soon after, Ashwin dismissed Khawaja for 8(42) leaving Aussies reeling at 3/60. Marsh and Handscomb joined hands, and soon the latter was removed by Shami.

First innings top scorer Head joined hands with Marsh as the duo tried to forge a partnership. With Shaun Marsh unbeaten on 31(92)* and Head on 11(37)*, Aussies ended the day on 104/4, with 219 required to win with 6 wickets remaining. Ashwin scalped 2/44 while Shami had figures of 2/15.
