The third day of the second test of India's tour of Australia began with Aussies resuming on 277/6, and Cummins was removed for 19 by Yadav and Bumrah dismissed Paine who scored a resilient 38(89), and the tail was then rattled as Aussies ended their first innings on 326.

Ishant Sharma was the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of 4/41. Indian innings began, on a disastrous note, as they lost opener Murali Vijay cheaply for a duck, dismissed by Starc, and a struggling KL Rahul was removed by Hazlewood for 2(17).

Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli joined forces and forged a partnership of 74, before a patient Pujara was removed for 24(103) by Starc. Ajinkya Rahane joined skipper Kohli and started scoring at a steady pace. The duo kept Aussie bowlers at bay, as India ended day 3 on 172/3, trailing by 154 runs with Kohli 82(181)* and Rahane 51(103)* unbeaten on the crease.
