The fourth test of India's tour of Australia began with India winning the toss and opting to bat first. While opener KL Rahul got out early in a disappointing fashion yet again, Mayank Agarwal stood firm despite the trouble around and forged a partnership with middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara.

Pujara went on to score a calm and composed ton, his third of the series and 5th against Aussies, and 18th overall, and Hanuma Vihari gave a solid stand , as India ended day 1 of Sydney test at 303/4, with Pujara unbeaten on a rock solid 130(250)* and Vihari on 39(58)*. Hazlewood was the pick of Aussie howlers with figures of 2/51.
