The first ODI of India's tour of New Zealand began with New Zealand winning the toss and batting first. Kiwis lost both their openers Munro and Guptill to Mohammed Shami, as Williamson and Taylor tried to resurrect the team with a stand. However, Chahal removed Taylor for 24(41).

None of the Kiwi batsmen barring skipper Williamson could stand the Indian bowling attack, and as Williamson kept scoring before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav for 64(81), the rest of the batsmen fell like a pack of cards as kiwis went from 4/76 to 10/157. Kuldeep was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 4/39, and Shami scalped 3/19.

The Indian batting began on a good note, with openers Dhawan and Rohit Sharma scoring runs steadily. Though Rohit was dismissed soon for 11(24), Dhawan and skipper Kohli were in no mood to relax and hit runs forging a partnership, as the duo hit runs at will, before Kohli was removed for 45(59). Dhawan scored an unbeaten 75(103) *, taking India to 156/2 and a victory by 8 wickets with Duckworth Lewis method.
