The first T20 between India and New Zealand began with India opting to bowl first, and New Zealand had a solid start with Seifert giving a massive start scoring a blitzkrieg 84(43b,7x4,6x6) in company of Munro who scored a stunning 34(20) and  Skipper Williamson's 34(22) before few wickets tumbled down. However, towards the end, Taylor's 23(14) and Kugglejein's 20(7) helped Kiwis post a massive 219/6.

India began batting on a disastrous note as Rohit Sharma got out scoring just 1, and while Dhawan (29) and Vijay Shankar(27) gave hopes for a while, they too departed soon, and Santner ripped apart removing Rishabh Pant.

Sodhi struck to remove Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya, the only hopes, but Dhoni alone stood firm at another end, and as he reached 39(31) waging a lone battle alongside tailender Krunal Pandya 20(18)*, Kiwis bundled out India for 139 with 4 balls to spare and won by 80 runs. Southee had 3/17 and was the pick of Kiwi bowlers.
