The final ODI between India and Australia began with Aussies winning the toss and electing to bat first. While Finch departed after scoring 27(43), Khawaja and Handscomb joined hands and started scoring well as Handscomb scored 52(60) and Khawaja departed at 100(106).

However, barring Richardson 29(21), none of the Aussie batsmen could score runs, as they were ultimately wrapped for 272/9, with Bhuvaneshwar Kumar picking 3/48 and Shami and Jadeja picking two wickets apiece. The Indian batting began disastrously, losing opener Dhawan for 12(15).

Skipper Kohli too departed after scoring 20(22), and then Rohit Sharma scored an important 56(89) but received no support from others except Jadhav 44(57) and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar 46(54), as India finished at 237, losing by 35 runs and lost the series 3-2.
