Summer internships across management programmes usually follow a scripted path. Students spend a few weeks in a functional team in a large company. More often than not, they are attached to projects that won’t see the light of day. Reports they submit at the end of their stints often remain unread. The Vedica Scholars Programme for Women seeks to change that. Launched in July 2015, Vedica is a unique 18-month post-graduate management programme that aims to build a cadre of women professionals for the 21st century.

Vedica also reimagines the conventional management curriculum, which is increasingly found inadequate in scope and pedagogy. The Vedica curriculum is enriched with courses in the liberal arts, critical thinking and personal leadership. Much like we have reimagined management education, we have redesigned the summer internship as well. Our 'Shadow a Woman CEO’ initiative is designed to expose Vedica scholars to a successful, senior professional woman, across industries and geographies. Vedica Scholars will mimic an ‘EA to a CEO’ role to these women leaders for four weeks.

The ‘Shadow’ programme, scheduled from August 1-31, offers Vedica Scholars an insight, both into women’s leadership and professional rigour at close quarters. Having a close rapport with a senior industry professional is also a formidable advantage for young women entering the workforce. This programme is modelled on the Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership offered by the US State Department and the Fortune magazine. Participants of this programme relocate to the offices of a top American female executive from a Fortune 500 company for an onsite mentorship assignment, in which each woman shadows their mentor and learns from the best practices of their host company.

The benefit to mentees and young women is obvious and tangible. For the senior women who mentor, it is a privilege to help train and build the next generation of women leaders. Vedica’s Governing Council is composed of role models that define women’s leadership globally - such as Meenakshi Gopinath (Former Principal, Lady Shri Ram College for Women), Madeleine Albright (Former US Secretary of State), Vinita Bali (Former MD, Britannia) and Savita Mahajan (Former Deputy Dean, Indian School of Business). As our Scholars gear up to participate in the upcoming module in August 2016, we are delighted to have received an overwhelmingly positive response from senior women leaders across organisations. Some of the mentors on Vedica’s ‘Shadow a Woman CEO’ Programme 2016 include:

  • Gunjan Soni (CMO, Myntra)
  • Kalpana Rumburg (Vice President, Global Risk Oversight, American Express)
  • Abanti Sankaranarayanan, (MD, Diageo India)
  • Miniya Chatterji (Chief Sustainability Officer, Jindal Steel and Power Group of Companies)
  • Roxanne Hakim (Social Development Cluster Leader, The World Bank)
  • Samina Vaziralli (Head of Strategic Projects, Cipla)
  • Sasha Sanyal (Senior Vice President & Global Leader, Corporate Strategy, Genpact)
  • Kshama Fernandes (MD and CEO, IFMR Capital)
