The Election Commission’s flying squad and Income-Tax officials on Sunday has raided a posh apartment in Egmore here and has seized over Rs. 4.72 crores and has allegedly meant to be distributed to voters, from an influential businessman in Karur district.


The raids which began late afternoon have extended into the night and sources have indicated that two occupants of the house were taken to another location in the city. Meanwhile the opposition leaders including DMK president M Karunanidhi and CPI State Secretary R. Mutharasan has cited media reports and have demanded to know the nature of the alleged link between a State Minister and Anbunathan, the Karur businessman.


A senior Election Commission official in Chennai has said personnel manning the election control room at the Chennai Corporation have received a tip-off around 3.30 p.m. about the presence of cash at the second floor apartment in A Block of the Commander’s Court on Ethiraj Salai in Egmore.


The election flying squad and the Income Tax Department was informed and a team lead by a Deputy Director arrived at the apartment and the raids were video graphed in the presence of Returning Officer (Egmore).  A police officer has said that the occupants of the house were the sons of a political party functionary based in Thanjavur.
