Hundreds of residents from across Hyderabad, who were eagerly awaiting a property tax rebate offered by the GHMC, were in for a rude shock after they learnt that their online tax payments never reached the civic body.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to go paperless from June 1 this year, but residents are not convinced about its technological process and the residents who has  paid their property tax in April, were eligible for a five per cent tax rebate in view of the `early bird' scheme.

Ravinder Bandari, a city resident has said that he has received a similar confirmation from his bank, but the GHMC website and the property tax portal failed to acknowledge the payment and he had a property tax due of Rs 44,982, after the online transaction, there was no receipt that was generated.

Even surveys such as the Annual Survey of Indian Cities, conducted by the Janaagraha group, have found civic services provided in the city to be abysmal and the survey has raised questions about use of information technology by the civic administration, Hyderabad received a measly score of 1.7 out of 10.
