The new state of Telangana has reportedly stumbled upon some good news with a survey by the irrigation and panchayat raj departments finding that there are new 5,008 new small and medium tanks which were added to the state. While there has been no official confirmation as to how the new water bodies came into existence, babus of the irrigation department have reportedly said that these are the result of watershed protection as well as check dams. They were constructed by previous governments, especially the TDP regimes. The irrigation department has reportedly conducted a physical survey of all the tanks in nine districts as per the directions of irrigation minister Harish Rao recently. This is for interconnecting and restoring them. The survey revealing that there are 5,008 tanks in actually excess of official figures has reportedly surprised the senior irrigation department officials who are overseeing this survey!
