At a time when governments in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been discussing regarding smart cities and digitally stronger societies, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has criticized large number of universities in the region for failing to digitize campuses or even supply information on the steps taken so far.

Constant reminders from the UGC to the 28 varsities, 15 from Andhra Pradesh and 13 from Telangana, have disclosed that the universities have not still presented their report on willingness of technology on campus. The UGC asked for information on optical fiber connectivity, LAN facility and Wi-Fi facility in all campuses previous year.

Under the ‘Digital India Initiative’, UGC plans to have e-governance and e-content in the education branch so that every varsity is well connected all over the country. The programme, targets to furnish universal digital literacy by 2018, among different other issues totally costing about Rs 1 lakh Crore.

The UGC dispatched reminders in December 2014 and followed it up with two more reminders in January and February of 2015, which have been failed to consider by most varsities.
