Clearing all hurdles for the upgradation of the Vijayawada airport,sources say that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued for
tenders finally to take up works on the new terminal building. The proposal for airport expansion was lying pending for several years.
The new terminal building is expected to be ready by December 2016 while the cost of this project is nearly Rs 137 crore. The AAI has earmarked about five acres after securing the permission from forest department. The AP government turned is devoting high attention on Vijayawada airport after bifurcation.
The new capital city of Amaravati
This airport will be serving the new capital city of Amaravati. This is only an interim arrangement which would become a cargo terminal once the AAI completes a swanky permanent terminal building involving international standards after it gets land from the farmers under LPS.
A new road connecting the Chennai-Kolkata national highway with this new terminal will also be laid even as the permanent complex would be reportedly ready in three years. The state government wants to upgrade this airport to even operate international flights very soon!
