National carrier air india has been receiving praises for operating flights and evacuating stranded passengers across the world during the coronavirus crisis. The pilots, cabin crew and ground staff have also been applauded for rising to the occasion and rendering the service to the nation. But while flights are being operated, air india staff have raised serious concern about the coronavirus insurance cover and sought an explanation from the airline.

At present, an air india staff is eligible for life and health insurance when they contract the infection in the flight, but the insurance clause does not cover Covid-19 as soon as the plane lands on the ground. An air india employee told india Today tv that the group insurance also reduces to a “paltry” Rs 10 lakh when staff lands after a flight. It may be noted that the air india staffers have been putting themselves at risk during the various international evacuation missions conducted by the government.

air india staff has also written to the Executive Directive Inflight service with regards to financial security. The cabin crew say that the move will motivate the morale of the staff and that the airline will reap the benefits in the future. Talking to india Today tv, some crew members shared their concern. “The management has been silent on our flight Insurance cover of USD 1,30,000 to cover our lives during quarantine and also in case of death. We are not sure if the insurance cover is being taken as these are not scheduled flights,” said a crew on condition of anonymity.
