Actress and Congress member Divya Spandana was accused of being involved in the spot-fixing scandal in 2013 in Indian Premier League by reports by Asianet and Suvarna News. Following this, the actress had filed a defamation suit and now a Bengaluru civil court has pronounced verdict that Asianet and Suvarna News had defamed Divya Spandana with their two reports.
As per the court order, Asianet and Suvarna News must pay damages of Rs 50 lakh to Divya Spandana as their reports on Divya being a part of spot-fixing were proved to be false. The actress had earlier filed the case after Asianet and after Suvarna News published two reports in May 2013 with Divya Spandana's images being used.
The reports were about Kannada actresses being involved in IPL spot-fixing. Currently, the actress is Congress social media operations head, and she was Royal Challengers Bangalore brand ambassador in 2013. As both the media houses could not show evidence to prove Divya involved in spot-fixing, the court called it a violation of ethics and tarnishing the image of the actress. Divya Spandana later said that justice has been served.
