An Indian-Canadian Sikh has been elected as head of Canada's Peel Police which is recognized as the country's third largest Municipal police force. The person who goes by the name Amrik Singh Ahluwalia was voted as the new chair of Ontario's Peel Police Services Board after receiving backing from Brampton Mayor Linda Jeffrey and Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

After getting unanimous votes, Ahluwalia said, "My first thoughts are, What a peaceful and wonderful nation we live in. I have arrived Canada decades ago with just $7 in my pocket. I couldn't even imagine that I will be bestowed with such an honour and responsibility.

I am totally honoured. This is indeed a great responsibility. I take it with humility and with a sense of purpose that I want to do my very best. I will do my best to  serve the public and serve the police force."

It has to be recalled that, Ahluwalia was initially appointed by the provincial government in February 2011 and he was re-appointed for second term in April 2014.
