visakhapatnam: The land acquisition process for the proposed Salur bypass project is being speeded up with another four acres of land remaining to be acquired. The National Highway (NH)-43, which passes through Salur town in Vizianagaram district, has been a traffic choke point for over two decades due to heavy vehicular movement along the road.

Sources in the state public works department-National Highways (PWD-NH) said that though the project was conceived of as a standalone project over two decades ago, it did not take shape due to local and other reasons. The project is now being taken up as an integrated part of the Raipur greenfield road and the first detailed project report (DPR) was prepared in 2016.

However, NHAI sources added that in 2016, the land acquisition process was taken up on a major scale with over 44 acres of land acquired for the six-km project that would skirt Salur town at the southern end and NH-43 (Raipur road) at the northern end. Though 60 acres have been acquired so far, another

four acres remain for the land acquisition process to be complete. The cost of the project amounts to around Rs 48 crore, sources said. Opposition to the project had earlier come from local businessmen who feared loss of access to the market.

PS Raju, a businessman from Salur, said, “It is better to have a bypass and let the market expand, rather than lose market space.” Rajanna Dora, MLA Salur and State Estimates Committee chairman, said, “It is a central government project and we have approached them for funds. Recently, two of our MPs, the Vizianagaram MP and the Araku MP, have spoken to the Union minister. The minister promised to release funds for the project at the earliest.”
