Senior leader of Congress party and MLA from Nagarjunasagar, K Jana Reddy was reportedly elected unanimously as the leader of the Congress party in the Telangana Legislative Assembly recently. At the same time former APCC president and MLC, D Srinivas was elected as the leader of the party in the Telangana Legislative Council. The party has 21 MLAs in the 119 member Telangana Assembly. Due to intense competition from many leaders for the role as the leader of the opposition in Telangana, congress chief Sonia Gandhi reportedly sent Digvijay and Vayalar Ravi to ensure the smooth conduct of this election. Congress finalized K Jana Reddy, who enjoys the distinction of being the longest-serving minister in erstwhile AP and sources say that there is one more angle to it. The party feels that by appointing Ponnala as PCC chief before polls it has made a mistake by alienating the powerful Reddy community of Telangana. And they may have paid the price for it even as TRS fished in the troubled waters to net majority of Reddy votes and also gave them high preference for ministries. Hence Congress expects to be back in the reckoning soon.
