Around 41 metric tonnes of garbage has been removed from Marina Beach in Chennai. This whole garbage was collected in Chennai during the Pongal festival. The city has been made as a garbage dump during the Pongal holidays.
Chennai Corporation has used more than 300 Sanitation workers and 14 Vehicles to clean the pavements, service lanes and the lawn. The corporation officials said the whole lane of Marina beach was spoiled with these excess garbage.
Recyclable waste such as 2000 Kgs of Tea Cups, 550 Kgs of Plastic covers, 256 Kgs of Plastic bottles and 40 Kgs of Paper plates were sent to recyclers. The corporation brought 70 employees and 3 vehicles to carry the tonnes of garbage.
On Day one eight tonne of garbage was cleaned. On the second day, ten tonnes of garbage was cleaned and on the final day, which is called as 'Kaanum Pongal day', they cleared twenty three metric tonnes of garbage. 152 workers worked on the last day of Pongal.
