Okay fellas, Does your dog has a license ? Don't get surprised if this question is thrown at you. Most of them are unaware that Chennai city corporation has made it compulsory to have license for pet dogs. Cats and some other species were excluded in this category as they don't cause more harm like others.
The reason why dog license has been made mandatory is lots of stray dogs are creating troubles. The documents for dog license can be got through all Veterinary Hospitals. The number of licensed pet dogs in the city has declined from 1,643 in 2012-13, 1,569 in 2013-14 and 1,457 in 2014-15.
Corporation charges Rs.50 per dog as a license fee for a year. Officials said that the license is mandatory but still there is no provision to penalize the owners. A Senior Corporation Official said, "It is the responsibility of pet owners to get the license done. Also during renewal the dog gets free immunization."
As per Madras City Municipal Corporation act of 1919, a dog without a license tag can be considered as stray dog and killed.
