Every day the residents are feeling the jolt which are caused by blasts at a stone quarry at Perumugai Panchayat and the stone quarrying for 20 years has left the villages in lurch and has also led to depletion of ground water after two perennial streams were totally wiped off.

The people have sent a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer, Tamilnadu and it was written in the letter that the quarrying which is spread for nearly 250 acres has robbed the natural wealth of the panchayat as the drilling work continues throughout the day. Explosives are used 25 times a day and the villagers feel the vibration in their houses.

Many houses have developed cracks due to blasts and the jolt is felt even two kilometers away from the quarry site. A villager added that there are two perennial streams that have brought water to the tank in a village and the streams are blocked due to blasting. As stones have blocked the way, the stream is wiped out.

Residents also have told that there are showers of rocks during the blast and the rock has fallen on the temple and has broken the idol three years ago. The villagers have submitted petitions to the CM’s cell and as there was no response they have decided to boycott the elections. Their demand is to close the quarry immediately.
