Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly signalled to Andhra
Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's recent suggestion that the
sharing of water between the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
needs to be monitored by the apex council.
Sources
say that Naidu discussed water sharing issues between the two Telugu
states with PM Narendra Modi during his one-on-one meeting that was
planned in New Delhi on Tuesday. Modi reportedly agreed to resolve all contentious issues of water sharing with support from apex council.
This
will be reportedly headed by the Union water resources minister Uma
Bharathi. Meanwhile the Krishna and the Godavari boards would be asked
to ensure the current utilisation of water as per the norms issued by
the Centre.
The state of Andhra Pradesh is in
favour of the issue going to the apex council while Telangana is opposed
to any takeover of reservoirs by Krishna river board. In a way this may
take the steam out of Jagan’s Jala Deeksha and also Harish Rao’s
threats. The coming days will give further clarity.
