Centre issued ordinance to defer the implementation of NEET or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for medical and dental courses for state governments and their affiliated institutions for this academic year.

Central Government has issued the ordinance following clearance from the Union Cabinet. The development is likely to benefit large number of students as they were in a fix due to uncertainty regarding the NEET examination. Earlier Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejiriwal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he requested him not to bring any order against Supreme Court.

The exam will be applicable to those who apply for Central government and private management institutions under the management quota. The decision to issue an ordinance was taken in aftermath of several meetings between Union Health Minister JP Nadda and state health ministers to discuss the issue.

The state government representatives had asked the centre to consider the stress the students will face if this uncertainty continues. Despite court's order several states including Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu said the common entrance test should be deferred by at least a year.
