The DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday has sought to know if the Election Commission of India would disqualify Chief Minister Jayalalitha on this ground, alleging that some officials of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) were misused to transmit AIADMK's publicity material to the media in the run up to the recent Assembly elections.

In a statement, Mr. Karunanidhi has said in 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s election from Rae Bareli was set aside by the Allahabad High Court for allegedly engaging an Uttar Pradesh government official for electioneering.

He has charged the DMK’s organization secretary had brought it to the notice of the Chief Electoral Officer, but no action was taken even though all officials come under the purview of the ECI during the period.

He has alleged and has also wondered if action would be taken as was done in the case of Ms. Indira Gandhi that it is a clear violation of the model code of conduct and it happens only because of the appointment of people with political backgrounds.
